so trying to build a macro with search items. I have to constanly search and replace smart quotes and other cruft with plain ascii. I have tried building a macro by recording but it never saves. any advice on doing this?

Yes, I do you use TextFX to some, but I do alot of cut and paste from Word to web form, and the formatting is helpfully pasted along with text, so I end up cutting to NPP, converting quotes and getting rid of other stuff, then pasting into the form.
since I do the same thing all the time, I was hoping for a one button solution.

Search/replace actions ca,nnot be saved because replaying them was unsafe and led to loss of data. Perhaps some day I can get this working, and perhaps I submit a patch, and perhaps it makes it into the code.
In the meantime did you try using the vaious commands on the TextFX -> TextFX Character submenu? They seem to be doing what you want. I have never tried puttin them into a macro though.

That would be a feature request for TextFX. But I wonder if there is any active maintainer.

Thanks for the clarification Chris.
