I can't for the life of me figure out how to assign "XML" syntax highlighting to a file extension such as .pkg.

I open up a new .pkg file, and it's plain text every time. I tried to use the file association settings, but that didn't work AT ALL. How do I tell Notepad++ to use a language syntax highlighting for a file extension?

Settings -> Style Configurator, select XML on the lefthand list. In the lower left corner, there is an "user ext" field. Enter "pkg", or add " pkg", there, save and go.

Nope, doesn't work.  At least with version 5.4.5.  I tried to add the config extension and it does not work.

You were careful not to add a leading period to "pkg", and to make te addition while "XML" is selected on the leftmost list. When you close N++ and reopen the file, what does the leftmost status bar pane show?
