I have an interesting dilemma - installing Stellarium 0.10.1 and 0.10.2 goes off without a hitch, and my frame rate is outstanding - I am using Ubuntu 8.10 UMPC. Unfortunately, the text is all screwed up - it's all garbled and frankly just looks like gibberish. I have a screenshot, but cannot figure out how to upload it to this forum (if you can tell me how, I'll do it!)
Please help! I have turned off all desktop effects, but to no avail. Is there something really obvious that I am missing here? Anyone else have this problem?

I just had a similar thing on a Dell Inspirion 1420 with the Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller running Fedora 11 and Gnome. The thing is - sometimes I get the whole screen garbled and sometimes are just the menus and / or input windows. It was even worse using KDE: the whole screen was regularly garbled. The Fedora has been updated to the last available patch. I have no idea how to figure out which driver version I have, but I would assume it's whatever is the latest in the Fedora 11.

I am using a Samsung Q1 Ultra - I think the card is an Intel 945. It's weird - the frame rate for both Stellarium and Celestia are through the roof - it's just this weird text. I should also mention that the previous version of Stellarium (with the small menus - the last in the version 9 series) works perfectly. I just don't like the small menus! :)

Yeah, looks like a video driver issue. I think there has been another report about the Intel cards with the 0.10.x series and fonts. Are you running the 32 or 64 bit Ubuntu? Also, what video driver version are you using?

Looking at your first screen shot it looks like you are missing many of the characters in the text display. This is a problem that I have found in Windows using a SiS 661 display since the introduction of Qt4.5.0. I have not built in Ubuntu with Qt 4.5.0 yet
It does not happen with the same program run on an intel display with the latest drivers (later than september 2008). I have not found a later driver for the SiS661.

I just had another thought. Have you tried changing the maximum frame rate in the config.ini file to something like 20 or 30. I have heard that has often improved displays.

Thanks, Barry, for your input. I will try to edit the config.ini file - and as for the video card, I can't for the life of me figure out how to install a fresh graphics card driver in Linux. I have tried to download one from the Intel site (I have a 945gm card) but to no avail.

It's probably a graphics driver issue. What video card /driver type are you using?

issue with WinXP x64 and an ATi HD3870 running ATi Catalyst 9.6 drivers.
