okay, i found a post from 2005 from someone who lost their settings due to updating.
i'm pretty sure it's 2009 now, and it still doesn't keep the old settings?
is there some good place to complain about this? maybe as a feature request.. although it seems kind of obvious to me. oh well.

I confirm you that it's 2009 now.
As well all the old Notepad++ settings are kept after updating of installer.
OTOH, are you sure it's Notepad++ you are using?

I agree. When you get to the location where there are three downloads, choose npp.x.x.Installer.exe , not npp.x.x.bin.zip. The Installer.exe will look after everything for you.

He probably just searched the forum for a bad search thread or added a real old version to the end.
