U3 is a software that if included for free on many SanDisk drives that allows you to run portable applications included in the Software Directory easily at http://www.u3.com/.
I personally don't like it and have never bought a SanDisk USB, so I have never tried it, but it is proprietary.
The reason why I don't like it is that it's very slow on start up many people have told me and isn't open-source.
im2crazy4u is right; just use the Portable Apps version; you don't have to install anything; just download a extracting setup-like exe file that you just select the "so-called install location" as the root or any folder or your USB Drive...

No more needed. From 5.1.2 version Notepad++ is 100% natively portable (thanks a lot donho & C.)

I was not aware of that. However, one thing that the PA people do is to shrink the files as well to reduce the footprint on the USB sticks. Unless they've stopped doing that too?
But, this should not negate that Notepad++ is now portable for all!

I don't like the not native portable apps. Portableapp's Applications aren't native portable. They use an external launcher (so two processes at run-time, the real app and the external launcher and sometimes problems with Win file associations) and written in an interpreted language (so more inefficient than a compiled one).

I bought an U3 USB key a few years ago. They may have fixed, cured, improved since, but I guess the fundamental flaws remain.
The first one is that most of the few apps that were available then, did NOT work AT ALL as advertised. For instance (sorry I write from my memory, but the main issues should be accurate) it said you could plug the key into your friend's PC, check your email, reply, update contacts, and so on, then shut down the key and unplug it, your friend's PC would remain totally unchanged. In facts the program assumed to do this did not even TRY to do that, not even the tiniest bit: it would just copy your email system from your PC onto the key, then from the key to another PC; which you can do with any regular USB key.
I later discovered that MOST applications in the U3 system were like this, i.e. just false advertising. In addition even the unplug function did not work as advertised: always failed on XP Pro (did work on W2K)
So I concur with previous posters: stay away from U3, which is beaten by PA, which in turn are more and more rendered irrelevant in some cases by natively portable applications.

If you want something like U3 for free, check out Mojopac by RingCube, a start-up working on virtualization at http://www.mojopac.com...
Or, if you just want one application, like Firefox, or Notepad++, of course Portable Apps would be the best!
