I want to have eclipse/pydev be to default to open .py files. When I try to associate the file type right-click->open-with->other the OS tells me that "it is not known if this application can open Python script files" and Eclipse is grayed out. When I force it to use Eclipse by switching to "all applications" when I try double clicking a file, Eclipse will open, but the file will not load (at all). What am I doing wrong?

That's something Eclipse should add support to. Track https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=4922 for that.
