Dale, I suspect you're trying to use Notepad++ as a word processor. Notepad++ is a text editor (and a very good one), not a word processor like M$ Word. You can't set Bold or Italic, or otherwise override the font, while typing your text.
Notepad++ specializes in editing programming languages, and as such, it supports different font styles for different parts of the programming language. For example, different fonts can be selected for variables, constants, and comments, all based on a particular programming language. Don and Andy's comments refer to the customization possible for setting these fonts.
If you want to change the font while typing, you need a word processor, not a text editor. If you don't have M$ Word, you can use M$ Wordpad, which is included with Windoze. Wordpad is actually a decent light weight word processor, and IMHO, it's very underutilized.

Please do not recommend Microsoft Word to anyone. There is no reason that anyone this century should be using that. OpenOffice has been a superior replacement for Microsoft Word and Excel for a number of years now, and it's free.
It seems to me to be a very SIMPLE function
in text based editors to allow Bold/Normal text.

I couldn't disagree more with bblackmoor. OpenOffice is a poor step child to Microsoft Office. The SEARCHABLE help files alone are worth the price!
