How the heck do I change the background color? I have wasted hours Googling, looking in the preferences, etc. I see that 1.3.20 claims to have this rather obvious feature, but I cannot find it. I am running 1.3.20 on Fedora 8.
With a white background, I cannot use pydev. :-( I don't care if there's a GUI or if I have to go edit a file to do this.

Thanks for the post, I never would have found it. Color change was always very hard to find in Eclipse, and frustrating because settings are split into multiple places.

I'm using pydev as a eclipse plugin on Kubuntu 7.10
I do not see a configuration path as bwa describes above.
I can set colors for aptana/javascript as follows:
Window->Preferences->Aptana->Editors->Javascript->Colors
If I use this path:
Window->Preferences->Pydev I see no references to colors.
If I use this path:
Window->Preferences->General->Editors->Text Editors,
there are no references to colors.
Currently comments in python files are pretty much unreadable.
Any other ideas?
thanks
tim

Colors for code, strings, etc. are in window > preferences > pydev and the other colors (common to editors) are in window > preferences > general > appearance > colors and fonts.

Hello Fabio:
Thank you for the quick reply.
Following your directions: (quote Fabio)
Colors for code, strings, etc. are in window > preferences > pydev
(/quot)
On my setup, the top-level items under
window > preferences > pydev
are as follows:
Builders, Code Completion, Code Folding, Code Style, Debug,
Interactive Console, Interpreter - Python, Interpreter - Jython,
Logging, pylint, pyunit, scripting pydev, task tags, typing
Of those above, Completion, Code Style and Debug have lower-level
items, but I don't see any item that gives me an action to change
code syntax coloring.
Sorry to be so dense....

Tim

I do not understand. That is what I'm doing.
I select _Window_ from the Top-Level Menu of the Eclipse SDK window.
I then select _Preferences_ from the Drop-Down Menu.
I then select _Pydev_ from the left side. The available items
under this selection are as I stated above:
"""
Builders, Code Completion, Code Folding, Code Style, Debug,
Interactive Console, Interpreter - Python, Interpreter - Jython,
Logging, pylint, pyunit, scripting pydev, task tags, typing
"""
Again, I do not understand.

Hello Fabio:
I am looking at that link now. I do not know how to invoke the screen that is depicted there.
On my installation there is no top-level item in the Eclipse SDK menu bar called "Preferences".
The top-level items when a python file is opened are:
File, Edit, Navigate, Source, Refactoring, Search, Project, Run, Scripts, Window, Help
There is a screen dump at: http://www.johnsons-web.com/demo/aptanascreen3.png
Thank you for being so patient with me. I know that we can make this work, and
with my eyesight, :-) I must be able to (at least) darken those comments!

Yes, if you use the right-click, it's not the same as doing window > preferences from the toolbar (that's an action added by the eclipse core plugin that should really not exist... that way it'll just show the preferences filtered for the text-editor).
Cheers,
Fabio

Oh I get it! When I clicked on "Pydev" in the Window->Preferences I _did not_ expect an action
in the right pane and simply looked at the items below. I see it now, right in front of me. I was
going too far.

Pydev rocks.
Thanks again Fabio

Ok, but after you set your colors in your python editor window, you probably want to make an analogous color change in all the other eclipse windows (PyDev Package Explorer, Outline, Console, etc...) I have only been able to successfully change the colors in the Console, via Window->Preferences->Run/Debug[+]->Console. However the others completely elude me. There are no (obvious) settings for these in Window->Preferences->General[+]->Appearance[+]->Colors and Fonts.
I did notice that Window->Preferences->General[+]->Appearance[+]->Colors and Fonts[+]->View and Editor Folders has some settings that do affect the background colors of the active and inactive tabs (e.g. PyDev explorer and Outline). However there is no setting that affects the background color of the body of those tabs/windows.
Please help me stop pulling my hair out. Thanks,
Tim

Another thing... does anyone know how to change the color of the "code folding" column? I changed the Text Editor background color to black but there is still a white column at the left which contains the code folding controls. I haven't been able to do anything about this except for turn off code folding. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tim

Not really... aside from the syntax highlighting colors, I think all other colors are controlled by Eclipse itself, so, it might be worth asking in the forums at eclipse.org how to customize that.
Cheers,
Fabio

Ah, finally found it in Prefs > General > Editors > Text Editors.
Too bad the search box at the top of the screen doesn't point to this when searching for background.
Not pydev's fault though.

You can select window > preferences > pydev directly.

PS:
see

Take a look at: http://pydev.sourceforge.net/editor.html (selecting the pydev item itself should give you the choice to choose the colors on the right panel)

You should go from the toolbar: window > preferences (to open that dialog) and in the preferences dialog, select the 'pydev' item in the tree.
Cheers,
Fabio
And if I right - click in the Editor pane, I get a pop-up menu with "Preferences" as an item.
If I choose it, I do get another Preferences Screen.
You can see it at
http://www.johnsons-web.com/demo/aptanascreen5.png
and in my configuration, it looks nothing like the one at http://pydev.sourceforge.net/editor.html
