Nobody/Anonymous - 2007-10-30

I use Windows XP Pro SP2 full updated.
I tried to insert the Unicode character U+06CC directly from my keyboard, but Notepad++ converted it to U+064A. Changing format to UTF-8 with(out) BOM and Unicode Big and Little endian did not work.
I think it occurred because Notepad++ is not a Unicode application and uses system CodePage (mine is 1256) to insert the characters. Are there any solutions ?

    The reason no one answered may be that this is not really an npp problem ;-) But I work in this area so let's see what's going on:
    
    Using SC Unipad (the only dedicated unicode editor that handles Arabic-script properly), I typed the four forms of 06CC, 064A, 0649 then copied them to npp:
    
    06CC: ییی ی
    
    064A: ييي ي
    
    0649: ىىى ى
    
    Both in Opera and Npp 06CC comes out correctly, though there is a font bug in Courier-New; the middle form for 0649 does not come out right.
    
    I copied the above back to Unipad and the encoding remains the same; o6cc remains 06CC.
    
    This tell me that your problem has nothing to do with Npp or even the system unicode interpreter.
    
    Now keep in mind that the character 06CC has the following feature: in initial and medial form it has two dots, and in final and isolated form it has no dots (see the unicode manual). Are you sure you are not confusing 06CC-initial/medial with 064A? If you want no dots in initial-medial state then use 0649, though you will have to find a different font without the opentype bug.

  You said "then copied them to npp", I know that it works, but it does not work by inserting these characters directly by keyboard.
  I say that it is completely related to NotePad++, because I have not this problem with PSPad editor at all. ( http://www.pspad.com/ ) I can easily insert 06CC character in PSPad by keyboard and there is no problem with unicode characters.

    What keyboard do you use? Which OS (XP, vista)? Please give me as much detail as I can so I can try to reproduce it.

      Neil Hodgson has fixed the bug in Scintilla, and I've sent a note to Don as well. So 6CC should hopefully work properly in the next version of npp.

        Updating Scintilla module in Notepad++ implies significative modifications in new Scintilla module source in order to adapt to Notepad++.
        So it won't be in the next release.

  I use Microsoft default keyboard layout at Windows XP Pro.
  Again, I say that this is npp problem because I have not problem with PSPad editor and BabelPad editor.

    Ok, this is almost certainly a Scintilla bug. I installed the Persian keyboard layout in WinXP: On most Windows programs (like default Notepad, OOo, Opera -- in which I'm typing these lines) U-06CC comes out as 06CC. But in both Scite and Npp (both scintilla applications) it translates 06CC (Yaa-Persian) into 064A (Yaa-Arabic). So whatever library Scintilla uses to process unicode text has a bug.
    
    This is strange because I thought scintilla just uses the local system libraries.
    
    Please report this to Neil Hodgson and the Scintilla list asap. This is a serious bug that makes scintilla almost useless for transcribing Persian electronic text.
