What makes Notepad++ superior? That's easy enough to find out. It's free and open source. Download and install it. Bang the doors and kick the tires. Take it for a spin. See whether it works for you.

For me it is the '5 minute thing'. Default settings in Notepad++ allow You to start using it without thinking about it under 5 minutes. With me it was like that: I was researching the subject of light programmer editors for windows few weeks ago. It was kinda embarassing when I was opening html file with F4 under Total Commander and it came out within the Notepad window. I somehow don't trust it, and I somehow don't love it. Last time I used windows platform for editing code it was asm code, and it wasn't really important if code was colored or not, it was also very long ago. But now I needed something what could show me colored code, match the braces, maybe do some suggesting. I downloaded all those PSPads, notepads2, programmer notepads 2, and whole lots of other notepads and I gave them a shot. Although I wasn't satisfied with any of them in 100%, I HAD TO choose something to work with, since I had thousands of other things waiting, including some minor edits to html/css and I wasn't really feeling like pushing it to my samba-mounted drive for editing with vim from my Unix machine. So I choosed notepad++ as the one who will open files when I press F4 in Total Commander.
Why I did so? Well, I guess it was the most straigh-forward application among them. I never use the so called "project tree" and that was what disqualified PSPad. Yeah, I guess I can turn if off, but I will take another app instead of doing that, because I have no time for it. Another example:Programmers Notepad 2. There are some drop-down-menus on the bar, and some text input field, that disturbs me. What are they? Is that a google field? Oh come on! No no no.
Clean interface and minimum friction is what influences user decision. In Notepad++ interface just stays out of user's way. Simplicity rules.
Some time went by, and when last week I was forced to start heavy web-designing activity I truly recognized the power of Notepad++. Code styling works excelent, highlighting the brackets, or even the html tags helps a lot, it opens quite fast, and doesn't do any surprizes. I feel like I was using it my whole life, that imho defines an aplication with the interface designed well.

The TextFX plugin, and split screens. On Linux, I use Geany (yet another Scintilla-based editor) and would do so on Windows if not for Notepad++ with split screens and the TextFX plugin.

It is in sourceforge.net, framasoft, clubic, telecharger.com, filehippo ... well known in forums, in office.
It's free, opensource, light, easy to use, useful, portable, color printing, compare, 2 views, zoom ...

When I first started programming VBScript I missed my VS6.0 editors with colour context. Since I didn't want to install VB6.0 just to get it, I searched in Google and found Notepad++ as the first one in the results that was actually free.
I was looking for the following (in order of importance):
1. Free
2. Colour context
3. Small
4. Preferably open source
I tried Notepad++ first and stopped looking. Other people I work with have since shown me other tools that they use, but have a ton of extra features that I don't need. Notepad++ remains easy to use and I regularly get people that I'm showing code say, "what is that and where can I get it?"
I stick with it because it is free, light-weight and simple. Mind you, I'm still using 4.6 because it works for me.

I forgot to add: I've since tried others that you've mentioned and they seem to be trying too hard to be Notepad+++
