I usually have several files open from different projects/directories but when I open a new file it is always the last tab regardless the directory the file belongs to.

Since usually when we open a file it is from same directory from current open file ideally Notepad++ should open the new file as the next tab, moving other tabs to the right.

  Well, it should be a >choice< where to add/insert the new tab.

  Notepad has movable tabs. While it is not an automatic solution, it is easy enough to arrange the tabs as you like.
