Somehow I turned something on that when I use Ctrl-C / Ctrl-V to copy / paste, the copy works but paste show a small box with "SYN". Using the right click context, paste works fine. How do I turn this off?

Watch your shortcut mapper in the settings. There you have all scintilla commands. If the paste command has the right shortcut, watch for an ohter that uses the same.
