At first - great program! :)
I've question about change of tab colour (tab - I mean pleace where filename is, ususualy in upper, left corner). How to do this?
I want to get other color for file that hasn't been changed yet, and another one for file which has been changed. Is it possible in notepad 4.7.3?

I'm surprised this hasn't been answered since its January post date.
I too am curious about altering the tabs' color (of the open files). The default colors for the INACTIVE tabs are absolutely difficult to read. I checked the Styler Config as well as the Preferences and found nothing. If it's in there, please direct me to the precise spot.

You can set the foreground and background colors for the following styles/items:
Style____ : Active tab focused _____ the color of the bar above the active tab's file name
Style____ : Active tab unfocused ___ you'll see this in one of the views in two-view mode
Style____ : Active tab text ________ the color of the filename
Style____ : Inactive tabs __________ text and background color of inactive tabs

Well great! I see your post mentioning the new settings in version 5. When I downloaded and started using Notepad++ for the first time ever a couple of weeks ago, 5 was still in "beta". So thanks for your post!
Now, I extracted the files from the zip and copied into my existing notepad++ directory, overwriting all of my settings it seems. Now I must start over to configure the editor how I had it. This will take some doing as it did the first.
My question -- how should one update in the future? Best method to retain current settings?

What I always do:
* I keep a _backup_ of the complete Notepad++ installation folder. Whenever there is a new version I update this backup. It would be easiest to simply create the backup just prior to installing each new version. I also keep a backup in the installation directory itself of some .xml settings files. After updating the backup, I also update this backup folder.
So, I can safely install a new version, by using the new Notepad++ _installer_. The installer takes care of current settings, only adding new settings to them.
After installation, I always compare both directories, backup folder against new installation, to check and possibly correct any differences or changes.
I do the same after running and closing the new version.
Another way to _test_ a new version:
* Unzip the .zip archive to a _new_, _separate_, folder, and run the new Notepad++ from there. If anything should go wrong, you would be able to just delete the new folder. If it's OK, you will still have to copy your settings either way.
In short: .zip archives are easy for separate testing of a small but complete package.
If you want to upgrade, update and keep your settings, _always_ use the installer.
To be safe: always keep a backup folder or create one prior to installing any new version.

Actually, as stated in the message, it is only for the inactive tabs that (also) the background color can be set.
For the two focus bars, there is no background whatsoever, but I do not see why it would not be desirable to be able to set the active tab's background color as well.
