What is the File Associations tab for?
What's the difference between a Supported extension and a Registered extension?
The arrows only go one way in this menu... If you change settings here, how are they changed back?

I figured it out.
as an FYI - I'd like offer a few words of caution regarding these settings.
(1) yes, the arrows only point in one direction.
If you feed an .ext all the way through, it appears to go back to its original setting.
<?>so what the heck does that mean anyway</?>
(2) these settings are VERY POWERFUL. Adjusting an extension, (e.g. .vbs), here will MAKE CHANGES TO YOUR REGISTRY instructing your pc to use NPP as the default application host for that extension.

now, this might be particularly handy, if you want to create your own extensions to have them open in NPP. However, be careful of assigning any extensions in here if you actually want to be able to open or run them in their real hosts. If you screw up and extension, you can fix it in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.<BROKEN EXTENSION>.

To more easily access .ini's and .cfg's in NPP go ahead and change the "opens with" property to NPP for those file types, (i know, duh).

moving it to the trash will unassign, yes. I suspect in most cases one could use this feature without experiencing any trouble. It seems that NPP may add a string value to the .<your extension here> key in the Registry >> HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. In my experience the other day, I found that this notepad++ string value assumed the 'VBSfile' data value and left the default string hanging with a blank value. This didn't correct itself when I used the arrow to unassign this extension. I had to fix it manually.
This issue may or may not be a big deal depending on the extension in question. for .vbs files, you won't be able to run WSH on .vbs files unless you fix this.
I'm not inclined to futz with this feature any more.

To unassign an extension that you've registered, can you just use the arrow to move it to the trash can icon on the right?
