Error message - "God Damn Exception:666"

I have been using Notepad++ for about 2-3 weeks now. I really loved it till today. First, I could not open any more files. I closed the application, and restarted Notepad++ again. I was able to open one file. When I tried to open another one, same thing happened - no open file dialog box opened. So, I closed and restart, but still did not work. I had to close it for about couple times. Then, when I tried to open it again, I got two pop-ups, one "the mission finished successfully", and the second one, which was really scary "God Damn Exception : 666". It happened three times for my attempts to restart Notepad++. I was scared and uninstalled it.
My question is: is it just a practical joke? Or somewhat virus?
No, it's not joke, neither a virus, but a bug.

I've really enjoyed the product until today, and after experiencing the error then finding and reading this thread I guess I'm the only one leaving the product on the heap behind me because of the great offense I take at the programmer's choice of words here. I grant that this is a land of free speech, and it was just yesterday we honored the men and women who gave their lives or served to keep it that way. Still, free speech is not without it's responsibilities, one cannot for example yell "fire" in a theater. There are other voluntary and courteous requisites of free speech as well examples of those are found in making choices about when and where to exercises one's own free speech. It's not about whether or not you own the product or forum, or have the microphone or bully pulpit; these are choices that show regard for others as a consideration: perhaps avoiding profanity in front of ladies or children; perhaps not being anti-Semitic when visiting a temple, or not making fun of Mohamed in a mosque, etc. Showing respect for others and things they hold important or sacred is a sign of maturity. Whoever chose to use that error message was in full knowledge that some would find it offensive as I did; and because they knew that in advance their choice was inconsiderate, lacking in decency (respect for others), and unprofessional (conduct unbecoming). They deserve the accolades (good or bad) one ascribes to others in situations like this. Bevis and Butthead went off the air, but before they went some found their behind the barn under the breath immaturity humorous, others were offended, apparently more of the latter than the former. One thing we all knew was why it was behind the barn, under the breath, and on cable mostly late at night. I enjoy ROTFLMAO as much as anyone, and I can say with certainty that there are still myriads of humorous choices that can be used without resorting to offending others. How can the imagination be so demonstratively small in the face of software so mature? Someone capable of the discipline of making 1's and 0's do very skilled things can surely "think about" using epithets like "http://members.cox.net/dwpenn/not-ROTFLMAO-notepad.jpg" in times of frustration "and then choose not to" out of wisdom and respect. That course of action is a sure sign that maturity and regard for others goes with the skill. Dean Psalm 119:167; Deuteronomy 5:11
As the original maker of this error message, I have something to say in this thread.
There was no any intention of provocation, it's just a non conventional error message for me. Nothing more, nothing less.
A program crashed, and an error message displayed. An unprofessional attitude for me is change the error message instead of fixing the crash problem.
If I wanted to make a conventional program, which satisfies the conservatives, makes everybody happy and makes a lot of money, then I would release Notepad++ as a commercial product. Since you didn't pay for it, why don't you just remove Notepad++ from your computer and end story? I don't think it's the way to show regard for others by imposing your feeling and your vision to the others.
I don't think neither this error message will be offensive to 70% of Americans. If it will, then too bad - Notepad++ doesn't deserve this audience.

donho: good for you. Saying just about anything these days will probably offend someone, somewhere - some people will always take the wrong things waaaay too seriously. Thanks for the awesome software - and open source no less!

My story won't be so annoying as yours. I'll keep it short.
1. I consider your complete message as spam. You seem to have nothing to contribute to N++ or the forum.
2. You complain about others. You may be grateful you can and are allowed to, unlike some people who are not free to live and express their sexual preference because of harassment by other people who are religious and claim to have something to say just because of that.
3. I think your last remark is very clearly a demonstration that you are not just expressing an opinion but claiming that other people should do your way because someone else once wrote something stupid about that. Can't you think for yourself instead of referring to some story, and next to that, act yourself upon what you preach? We use our own expressions and don't say you shouldn't use yours. But you say we can't use ours. Does that make you a better or a worse person?

The text is pretty much the standard default exception text when an integer exception is thrown. The source for it is found in ...\Notepad++\Dev\PowerEditor\src\winmain.cpp at about line 283 in version 4.02.
The throw(666) function call is in ...\Notepad++\Dev\PowerEditor\src\WinControls\StaticDialog\StaticDialog.cpp and indicates a failure to create a static dialog. There are other throw(nnn) exceptions, not just this one.
I used Notepad++ in hex editor mode to edit itself and change the wording to say "Very bad exception" by clicking in the right-hand text section and typing the text, after finding it as an ANSI string data type. I saved the file to a separate executable, then renamed the old executable to a backup name and the newly-saved one to "Notepad++.exe". (This is one powerful editor!)
I had not encountered this message, but it appears to be the default integer exception handler indicating that it can't handle the exception. --Joel

You know, I SINCERELY came on to this site to PRAISE you and your product. I am 38 years old, ph.d. in computer science from a top 10 university in the usa, and i find myself using your editor for many tasks.
So give praise where praise is due: GOOD JOB!!!!!!!

I agree with your assessment, that my original message was lengthy and in the context of a product forum it could be spam, flaming, inappropriate, preachy, or all of those. To those that see it that way I apologize. So that I don't perpetuate that offense this correction to misgivings I fostered in that post will be my last contribution regarding Notepad++.
In the context of contributing to Notepad++ I made the case for removal of something that, according to "Barna Surveys," would be found offensive to 70% of Americans to name just one country of potential Notepad++ users. I was the messenger, but my comments were not about me, they were about choice and responsibility affecting the product quality and acceptance.
If someone made the case why the error message in question is what it is for helpful, professional, or design practice reasons I missed it. If they thought it would make Notepad++ more appealing to the masses, I'm obviously missing that point too, otherwise I would say Notepad++ would be better served by taking the high road, and that suggestion is meant to be helpful to both the product and its developers. Well, wisdom is with you, but please wake up: this is simply and only your personal opinion. First of all, you only bring up this 70% because YOU have this opinion. Second, you are not THEIR messenger. You speak for yourself, because YOU have a problem and you talk in general important-like terms to give weight to your saying. Why can't you simply say: "I don't like this - I pointed it out - no-one is interested - that's it - bye"?

Yes, you are. This message is FUN. If you can't see the joy of it, then that's OK. If you want to convince others that it is BAD, bad luck to you. The fact that on this particular subject you can't simply accept others' opinion are not like yours, indicates that you are not all that flexible a person. I guess you've been reading your book too well. Look up at the world. The sun is shining. Have fun.

In my country at least 90% of people would find it amusing and not in the least offensive.
So who's market do we now pander too? The USA? Iran? Is any one person more important than another here? Yes... the author... it is them that counts. They can do what they please in my opinion.
Don't try and tell us it is a bad thing. We can make up our own minds here. Either stop using the product, file a bug report, submit a patch or fork the project. You still have freedoms you know. :)
To take a wonderful product, a true labor of love, as an excuse for ranting on medieval fanatical chants, is a moron's choice. I propose we move on, and start a thread with recommendations of wonderful and wymsical error messages we would love to see come out of N++. Starting the flow:
* Your file got creamed because it lacks all sense of humour
* On recursion, like on evolution, "the jury is still out". Thus, this exception (almost literally picked up from that other great moron...)
* Your file has been kidnapped. Have sex on the grass, under a full moon's light, and you will find it again in your disk.

Reading this thread in it's entirety i find it very sad that people who want to make their feelings felt can't even be bothered to adopt a username.
