For some reason, I can no longer open txt files, whether I double click on them, use the file>open option or what have you. If I double click on a txt file, Notepad++ opens with whatever file I last had opened, or a new document,(as it should) but doesn't open the file I selected. If I go to the file open menu option, it lets me choose the file, but still doesn't open it. This includes files that Notepad++ created itself, a few days earlier! This is very strange. It is not limited to one file, it is a symptom affecting most of them.
And now the tech info:
Notepadd++ v4.8.2
Windows Vista Business
Service Pack 1
AMD Turion64 (x2)Mobile Technology 2.20 ghz with 2gb memory
32bit version of Vista.
Notepad has been running fine for me up until the past 2 days when it started doing this. Any ideas?

Also had the exact same problem with N++ v5.0 - the file associations looked fine, and none of the advice seem to help. Just found the fix by chance and it's working nicely now.
Try this...
1. Start Notepad++
2. Go to Settings > Preferences... > MISC
3. There is a text field called 'Session file ext' (mine had 'txt' set there)
4. Delete the extension and leave the field blank
5. Click 'Close' to save settings
You should now be able to double-click or drag-n-drop to open text files.
Please let me know if that works for you, and/or if anyone knows what extention should appear in that particular field.

I set the session extension to "TXT" the other day *thinking* that it would use it as the default file extention when I create and save a new document. It didn't and (obviously now) buggered up Notepad++ from opening TXT files.
Should've made the connection, but didn't! :o)

Same happened to me with NP++ 4.8.5 after I updated yesterday. I didn't know how to fix it. I reinstalled NP4.8.5, the problem still in there. I downgraded to NP++4.8.2. The result is the same. How could I fix it? Helppppppppp.

I had the same problem and indeed it could be in some way solved by changing the way the files are associated with Notepad++. After making the following changes, I am again able to open files with a double click.
1. Start Notepad++
2. Go to Settings -> Preferences -> File Association
3. Add the according extensions manually
As far as I get it, the problem seems to be that the path of the document is not correctly handed over to Notepad++ if you open it for instance per drag&drop. Besides, at my PC the problem occurs only if the document resides in a folder/path with space characters in its name.

Same problem here.
I tried all of the above. But double-clicking still does not work. Notepad++ opens, but with an empty file named: New 1
Opening a file from Windows Explorer with "right-click > Edit with Notepad++" works fine.

I don't know about Win7 but still this might be worth a try:
right click on any txt-file
choose: open with…
choose: search application
choose if listed or browse for NPP++
! don't forget to mark: 'always open this filetyp with this app' before submitting
with a bit of luck that'll set it right allright ;)
good luck

When I tried to delete the old version to re-install I got the message that the folder was in use by another application. This turned out to be tortoise SVN cache, don't know why. Got rid of the lock and Notepad++ started working again.

Same happened to me with NP++ 4.8.5 and only after reinstalling from scratch it worked again!

nobody know how to fix this problem?
Having similar problems with Notepad++ and Vista. Looks like drag n' drop doesn't work under Vista.
Same here, what is wrong?????
The same problem with Windows XP sp2. A very bad and annoying bug. I hope will be fixed soon :-)
May I know how you associate your files to Notepad++?

This worked wonderfully for me! Thank you so much.
