    Hello

    1. My XP host just crashed (for the first time in 2-3 months), and I lost every open window :-/

Is there a plug-in for NotePad++ that can save/recover open pages like Notepad, even when those windows weren't saved as files yet, ie. just stuff that was copy/pasted from elsewhere?

    2. I'm used to closing child windows with CTRL-F4, but NotePad++ doesn't seem to support this out of the box, and requires the user to click on the X button in the upper right-hand corner. Is there a way to add CTRL-F4 as a shortcut?

    Thank you.

Exactly. It's pretty handy to just copy stuff from eg. a web page, and paste it into a new, blank page in NotePad, without having to bother saving the page as a file. UltraEdit can recover such pages, but I use NotePad as well because UltraEdit's editor isn't as good as Scintilla.

      1. You may be interested in an autosave plugin:

It probably doesnt work on "new ##" tabs though. Right now Notepad++ doesnt recover well from crashes

      2. Close current document is currently mapped to Ctrl-W, use the shortcutmapper if you want it to be Ctrl-F4

The Microsoft keyboard guidelines [1] specify Ctrl-F4 for this functionality.  Ctrl-W is a very common alternative, but this is not part of the recommendation.  If it can only be one of the two then Ctrl-F4 would be a better default, but ideally it would be mapped to both keys.
