Instead of working with the left-right arrow to select a particular document as the way it is now in Notepad ++, why not make it a dropdown list as shown in the screenshot.
Actually this is something like a list of documents pop-up under the menu Window but that only limited to 10 documents only.

Can Notepad ++ provide an option to make all the document tabs with the same fixed width that can be set by the user?

have you looked at the windows manager plugin I think it will do the job :)
But they are very difference. The windows manager plugin takes many space to display.
I also support the "Dcoument Drop Down List", but it should have a scroll bar for long file list (just like the auto-completion list)
