Once I've pressed (by mistake) an "Edit" item on the windows explorer context menu when a large AVI-file was selected. And Notepad++ has terminated abnormally when it tried to open that AVI-file. And because NP++ was configured to open last files it has stopped operating at all. Every time I was trying to launch NP++ it opened that AVI and crashed.
I have had to rename that AVI file to make NP++ working again.

Or remove/rename the session.xml file containing the list of open files of the last session.
