I only found one message concerning this, in "Help" subforum and it is 11 months old, so I post it here...
Configuration allows new files to be UTF-8, and if you edit a UTF-8 file, it works perfectly.
But if you edit a existing file which has no extended characters, it will start as ANSI, and after that, if you type any extended char, you MUST remember to manually switch codification.
It should be very easy to add another option in configuration to allow UTF-8 as default instead of ANSI... and it might be very useful for many of us.
(No need to say that Notepad++ is a great tool, with only two lacks for my daily use: UTF-8 as standard and HTML-coloured export, as SciTe and PsPad do). Keep up the good work! (and merry xmas ;-) )

I hope npp can implement support for unicode filesystem instead. This is a common problem for open source project where the application can't open a file with unicode name or reside in a unicoded path/directory in win32 environment. Even the famous Firefox fail here.

Note that he has a plugin for Notepad++. Works great for my needs. (not involved with either project except as a happy user)
