    Hi,

Has anyone used jZip (http://www.jzip.com/)? I have seen comments on this forum about UI things and just wondered if anyone was using jZip. I have to admit to being cautious, I know the site says "No Adware / No Spyware / No Pop-Ups / No Trojans" but it is not Open Source and one has to be careful these days.

    So, comments anyone?

    Thanks

    Geoff

On their site, I saw this in the faq: 2. How is it different from other compression utilities?
jZip is built on proven and reliable 7-Zip technology. 7-Zip technology is fast and achieves compression ratios that are higher or equivalent to other leading compression programs. jZip differs from applications like WinZip when it comes to cost. jZip is FREE and we plan to keep it free for both home and enterprise users. We believe that the ability to create and open archive files should be free and available to all.

Seems like someone is violating the GPL. No source code download on their site at all, yet it uses 7zip's codebase. Hmmm...

      * unless of course, they're just using 7zip.dll or 7za.exe... then it might just be a GUI replacement.

I wish there was an edit button for this forum...

I took a look inside of the downloadable exe file - looks like this is a replacement for 7zip's GUI... but it IS incorporating v4.42 code into a new EXE file, with no source code download or diffs available, nor a copy of the GPL license. Instead, the programmer has provided his very own license, which is not the Gnu Public License at all... :(

He does, however, state that 7-zip is written by Igor, so it's not all bad, but is certainly not abiding by the proper license.

      >Seems like someone is violating the GPL. No source code download on their site at all, yet it uses 7zip's codebase. Hmmm...

7-zip is not GPL. It's LGPL. That means it's legal for closed source programs to link to 7-zip executables or dlls.

      From the 7-zip FAQ:
"Can I use the EXE or DLL files from 7-Zip in a Commercial Application?

Yes, but you are required to specify in your documentation (1) that you used parts of the 7-Zip program, (2) that 7-Zip is licensed under the GNU LGPL license and (3) you must give a link to www.7-zip.org, where the source code can be found."

jZip complies with (1) and maybe (3) but I cannot find (2). However there are 2 links from 7-zip homepage to jZip website so I guess Igor is not too worried about that.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up.

This reminds me to review the GNU licenses again. I always forget which one is which. :/

As 7-zip is licensed under the LGPL it's linking with property code is kind of legal :(
I first sow a link to this app on 7-zip's official page www.7-zip.org.
This app is not so good (really ugly, and with a small 2MB front end ) gui front end to igors official build of the 7-zip.dll's this is plural beacose it uses the old dll of 7-zip v. 4.42
Agen imho it can't hold a candle to the official 7z file manager.

      Hi guys,

I am from jZip and I can clarify some of the questions. jZip does use 7-zip as a library in compliance with the LGPL license (as already mentioned here). We do link to 7-Zip.org from our homepage and also from the software itself.

As to the question regarding adaware / spyware etc - jZip is 100% clean - it is an archiver and nothing else, no bundles, no spyware or anything like that.

jZip was created as a free alternative to WinZip that is also easy to use for novice users. 7-Zip is great software and the 7-Zip UI is great for skilled users like everybody on this forum. 7-Zip is however harder to use by less technically savvy users, casual users, novice users etc and jZip goal is to address these people and allow them to easily use the 7-Zip engine.

jZip is young and was just went live two weeks ago. So as for source code, becasue at the end of the day, most users, even the advanced ones, don't sit down and write code (most of the code on 7-zip was written by Igor), we are looking at a new concept: "open release plan", where every user can contribute his or her views to the release plan and once a consensus is reached, we will write the code. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this, about open source and about any feature, idea or other subject regarding jZip.

We are working on creating a forum on the jzip.com site so that we can discuss the future of jZIp, the "open release" concept and any other jZip related subject.

jZip seems to have a very nice GUI indeed. You guys and Igor should work together to make 7-Zip an even better archiver than it is now. You guys with the GUI, Igor with the algorithms... It'd be a perfect match :P

Thank you :-) We are already cooperating with Igor by using the 7-Zip engine library. We will continue improving the GUI with great new features and as the underlying library gets better, so will both 7-Zip and jZip. We believe there are many users out there that like 7-zip just the way it is. We believe it is best to keep both GUI options 7-Zip and jZip and let users choose which one they want to use.

      >jZip is a new and free compression utility for Windows.

I tried to run jZip.exe under Windows 2000 SP4. It failed with error "uxtheme.dll is not found". If You write "for Windows" please also choose, please also write what version of Windows it currenlty supports. Windows 2000 is not obsolete for me - it should be supported. Its system requirements are lower than in >= WinXP, so many people still using it. Please add support for Windows 2000 SP4, then I'll evaluate it.

      Best regards,

Thanks, we know about this problem with Windows 2000 - it will be fixed in the next version which should be out soon.

I installed jZip and all my browsers's homepages got changed to its search page. IE got a new toolbar. It does not get removed by uninstalling jZip alone, but you have to use 'Add/Remove Applications' to remove the bar manually. It may not have spyware, but it is definitely giving me an unpleasant experience.
