have installed notepad++ from both installer and zip ..
in both cases, the right-click context menu gives the same error message when used to open a text file:
"Error creating process: nppcm.dll needs to be in the same directory than notepad++.exe"
Well, nppcm.dll is in the same directory!
any clues how to fix?

I am now running Notepad++ without getting the context error message. I did two things; perhaps just the second thing is enough...I'm not going to experiment at the moment!
1. I changed the permissions in Security to "Full Control" for every option.
2. I chose compatability mode for Vista SP 2.
I also am not running the program as administrator.
Worked for me!

I did the 'replace native notepad.exe' hack long before this started, but I'm fairly sure I've now reverted it. Yet, the error is still going on.

There are two workarounds for this, each with a side effect:
a) Turn off "Run this program as an administrator" (without this option, Vista redirects N++ to save high-permission files in the VirtualStore folder, causing tremendous confusion).
b) Turn off User Account Control (which provides a needed layer of security).

actually i checked off the run as admin and for some reason it doesn't need to run as admin anymore!
i can run it without running as admin. may be a fix with the new 4.*

A temporary fix: Uninstall the latest and go back to 3.9. It works now. In fact, now that I think of it, the trouble started after I updated (to 4.0.1, I believe).

Still happening with 4.3 under Vista. It doesn't happen on my work machine, just my home one even though both are Vista.

Still have this problem under Windows XP SP3, Vista SP's 1 and 2 and Windows 7 Beta and RC1 :(
Any clue when a fix will be available?

I'd this problem and I was able to fix it.
I had this problem (message error about nppcm.dll), and it was caused by a file in the root of my hard drive called 'Program' (without extension).
Delete this file and it works like a charm.
Now I'm using the last vesion of Notepad++ (4.1.2) and I'm very happy with it ;)
PS: I'm using WinXP SP2 French, it's not a problem with Vista directly.

I had the same problem.
Deleting the file 'Program' is not neccessary.
I just renamed it to 'oldProgram'
that's sufficient.
I'm using WinXP English.
I've got the same problem, on VISTA, even though there is no file 'program' in the root-folder...
