I have a fairly large monitor here, and I usually turn off the icons. However, I still have occasions where I have more source files than I can see on the tab bar resulting in having to scroll back and forth.
I'd like to be able to resize the tab bar so that I can see as many tabs as I want without scrolling.

Or the option to have a fixed tab width (like Firefox, for example).
So files with large names don't mess up the tab bar - id would just crop the name.
Other suggestion: the little arrows to navegate along the tab bar are not veru intuitive. I think the "left" arrow should be to the left of the tabs.

Did you consider Settings -> Preferences -> Global, Tab bar, Mulltiline ?
The position of the arrows is the Windows standard. Developing a custom control just for putting the left arrow on the left is probably a large effort and likely source of bugs - is it worth the risk?
An option to crop the file name to a fixed length could be good, post that on IdeaTorrent.

From this page, look at the SF menu bar, it has a "Hosted Apps" entry. Hovering will display a popup, and IdeaTorrent is being listed there.
Basically, it is a nicely decorated idea box, with ability to vote for ideas and to follow them as they go into development. Quite convenient for us to gather requests and for all users to check for duplicate requests.
