well you could change your windows colors and that would do it, or if you are using a User Defined language you could even set everything up with the normal background color as black...
in my experience, it's best to change your windows colors - because it's better to make EVERYTHING easy to read instead of just this one application.
this will cause issues in a few applications, but almost all of them are overcomeable after playing with the individual app's settings.
the windows high contrast color scheme is probably the one that is best for what you are wanting to do... it's at least a good starting place and you can then modify it to your hearts content.
