I am new to Notepad and would like to sort a file. I have found a sort tool under TextFX-Tools. Unfortunately it appears that this tool only works by sorting from the beginning of the record, for the entire length of the record and only when I have manually selected (Ctrl-A) every record in the file. Isn't there a way to sort similar to the sort implemented in TextPad?
I tried to look for doc on this but apparently there is none for Notepad - not with the install and not in the documents section of this web site.
Thanks.
Jim
If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
TextFX Tools will sort only the lines you select. If you do a column mode select (see http://notepad-plus.wiki.sourceforge.net/FAQ\) then it will sort all the lines that are at least partly selected, but will sort them according to the selected part.

There is some documentation around, but it isn't complete:
- http://notepad-plus.wiki.sourceforge.net/space/pagelist. This can be edited by anyone, but is fairly new so not much has been added.
- There's still a lot of stuff that hasn't been transferred from the old FAQ at http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/about.php#. Check the popout menu that comes up when you hover over the FAQ menu item.
- If you click on the Downloads link (at the top) on that site, about halfway down there's a link to a help file, in various formats. This is basically a compilation of that page and the FAQ, I think. And it's a bit out of date.
There may be more. I think the way that website works makes if very hard for people to find the existing stuff, and to tell others about it (because it's hard to give URLs to specific places), and this has led to the belief that there's no documentation.
Now that we have the wiki, hopefully this will all change because we can now all start adding documentation. If you discover something about the program and can't find it mentioned anywhere, just add it to the wiki.

There is a file available, NPPTextFXdemo.Txt, which demonstrates a number of features possible with the TextFX plugin, including sorting on columns. Thus, it serves as documentation for those features.
I don't think the file is installed with NP++, although I think it should be. If you don't have it in your Notepad++\plugins folder, then you can download an archive that includes that file and more at http://textfx.no-ip.com/textfx/NPPTextFX27-v0.24aRelease-NPP34.zip.

You should add a sorting feature that will sort selected lines. That is very useful.

Hey Folks,
Thanks for taking the time to help out a newbie. It is much appreciated.
Jim
You can already do this. Try Plugins/TextFX Tools/Sort.

I don't know what Textpad's sort can do.
