In Notepad++ choose "Language" -> "Styler Configurator...". In the dialog, choose HTML language. Now, at the bottom of dialog there are "Default ext" and "User ext" fields. Type "tpl" into "User ext" field, then press "Save & Close" button. That's it - from now on, *.tpl files will be auto-recognized as HTML-syntax files.

The list of languages in the styler configurator doesn't have my own (custom) languages.. Should it?
Yes, it's normal.
