i have settings > preferences > new document > encoding utf-8 without bom selected and close. i create a new document, save it, and close it. then i reopen the saved doc and the document is ansi. i then check utf-8 without bom at format > utf-8 without bom and then i make a change so the save bottom highlights, and then i select save and close. i reopen the document and it is ansi.
i have duplicated this issue on w2k service pack 4 with v4.1.2 and v4.0.2 and xp home with v4.0.2. i cannot figure out why UTF-8 without BOM is configured, yet saved docs open ansi.
default install, using installer.
thanks in advance...

This question has been asked numerous times. If there is no BOM and the file does not contain any Unicode characters there is no way for N++ to guess that the file should be opened in Unicode mode.

Try using the "Search" with 'utf-8 bom'.
