I just tried to save my first file with this program and even though I'm selecting html from the drop down menu in the save as window the file is not saved as such. It's unrecognizable. Is this an issue with my computer settings or the program?

Could this be a bug? v4.1.2

I realized that I can add the extention in myself, but was wondering if that is normal to have to do that.

Well, it's normal in that Notepad++ doesn't currently add extensions if extensions don't already exist.

I'm in the minority on this; while I see value in what most others want, I hated how regular Notepad would destroy my extension by always appending ".txt" if I did not explicitly select "All Files".

Maybe there's some smart way to do this, and maybe it will be added in a future version... --Joel

        Hi,
I have been using NPP++ for about 8 months. Don't you think it's about time it conforms to 21st century conformity among programs? EVERY other program I use uses this perceived functionality the same way. They have a default extension (maybe in settings or options, huh?) and if in the rare cases you don't want that extension you can click on the drop down box and choose a different extension. It takes all of 15 seconds. For new users this seems to be the biggest mystery. Because it is called NOTEPAD! Not Programmer's something or other. It gets real old typing in .txt or .html fifty times a day. Or, copying and pasting it in. When I started using NPP++ I saved about 20 files before I realized there was no extension associated with the file. And you have to remember every time you save a file. Plus, using it as a filter only is rediculous. Most programs do both. A filter and a default extension.
From a programmer's perspective, this seems to be a fairly simple fix. If you want to know how I will explain it. But, you seem to be a bright guy. I am not C or C++ programmer, but have thought about learning them so I can get rid of this annoying "feature". And, that's really saying something. Many other applications seems to have implemented this and I see no reason that it can't be implemented in NPP++. I have seen at least 30 requests or complaints for this functionality and never seen a reply from any of the developer's. It seems not to exits to them. And, it will not bloat the program. I have seen more obscure requests implemented in files and programming languages that I don't even recognize. If I am wrong in any of my assumptions please advise. But, explain it to me. I don't except answers like: It can't be done or It takes too much to do it or It will bloat the program. I have found these are usually cop outs.

Well, Bob, you've been using Notepad++ longer than I have.  If it is that much of a hot button for you, I would encourage you to learn C++, get a compatible compiler and fix the things that frustrate you.  That's the nice thing about open source -- you can do this.  Otherwise you can try to find another tool closer to your preferences, or hire a contractor to build a custom editor.  Or keep asking for the improvements you want, and wait.

Yes, I would like to know how you would implement this.  As I said, maybe there's a smart way to do this.  My own comments on this will follow in a separate post.

Meanwhile please have mercy on the rest of us.  We are all volunteers.  No one is obligated to pay us to do any work on this, and most of those of us who try to answer questions on this forum are people just like you who don't have any more say in the matter than you do.

Now for some perspective:  While the request is a good one, there are hundreds of open bugs listed in the bug tracker.  After that there are hundreds of feature requests -- of which there were (last time I checked) only two "default extension" requests in the last six months, with no followup comments by anyone.  There is pretty much just one developer on the project with others that have contributed primarily in the form of plugins.  My guess is that, since the developer does this for fun and encouraging user feedback (!), he makes his living working in a real job.

I can not agree more with you Joel.

Bob, stop to whining because we owe you nothing. If you need some features that we have no time (or are not interested) to make, then make it yourself - it's open source project.

Otherwise, just don't use it. There're a lot of commercial professional software out there.

            Don
