I am running XP. I can't find c:\windows\system32\dllcache so as to replace notepad.exe with the 17K file from Notepad++. That cache is somewhere. The original notepad.exe immediately overwrites the replaced ones in C:\WINDOWS\ and C:\WINDOWS\system32\. Where do I find that remaining copy of the original notepad.exe?

If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
Try going to Start-->Run and typing c:\windows\system32\dllcache.
Also, before replacing any protected files make sure your XP install files aren't accessible (cd in drive, i386 folder somewhere on your drives etc...)

Try going to Start-->Run and typing c:\windows\system32\dllcache
An explorer opens with files. rename the notepad.exe to notepad.exe.orig.
Copy the new notepad.exe here.
Then replace the system32 and windows directory notepad.exe file.

Cannot replace Notepad in .exe. Am running on XP via a server??
Do not understand the ref. to Start Run etc. etc. All that brings up is a mass of files.
Wish notepad++ to totally replace Notepad - any suggestions, in simple language please?

If you're running via a server you may not be able to replace it without doing it on the server itself. Otherwise try searching for notepad.exe as the previous user mentioned. Make sure it searches in hidden files/folders too.

Thanks...I know how to find notepad.exe BUT how do I overwrite it. Has it got anything to do with file extensions? Notepad.exe is in C Drive, does not appear to be on Server !!

I get the same problem. All suggestions gratefully received!

Press Start Menu, use "search" and look for "notepad.exe".

Or look here, there is an MS-Editor Replacer tool:

I'm sure you've probably figured it out by now or have given up. I would ask do you have Explorer folder options set as follows:
ENABLE "Display content of system folders"
ENABLE "Show hidden files and folders"
DISABLE "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)"
Also note that if the replacement order in the NPPLauncher instructions does not work you might try the opposite order:
1. c:\windows
2. c:\windows\system32
3. c:\windows\system32\dllcache
I have used this order with great success.
I hope this is helpful to someone.
