I've noticed that with Notepad++ v. 4+ I have to manually minimize the application to switch to other open windows (like Firefox). No longer can I click on the window buttons in the status bar or use Alt-Tab. Has anyone else seen this? If so, is there a solution in place for this bug?

  v4.0.2 definitely has issues ALT+TABing between applications on Windows XP SP2 (at least).
  
  Run NP++ v4.0.2, ALT+TAB to another application then ALT+TAB back and the text cursor no longer has focus in the NP++ edit window - you have to click in the edit area before you can start typing again.
  
  v4.0.1 does not exhibit this behaviour and works as you'd expect.

  I have also noticed this problem on ver 4.02/xp. You have to use mouse click to get the cursor back otherwise no editing is possible.
  
  Good idea to stay away from ver 4.02 I guess.
