"Show Indent Guide" button behavior? v3.9

Seems like a nice editor app, but the "Show Indent Guide" button or menu item don't seem to do anything at all. I'm using a zipped download of v3.9 to edit a .html file.
Is this normal behavior for this feature? (Might be mode or language specific?) Or is there some other setting that needs to be activated/adjusted first?
I noticed that it's actually there in a later experiment. It's just that the default display is very faint and hard to see. (May even be invisible on some monitors.) This might be a good setting for printing, but are there settings to make display of this feature more prominent?
