    Hi
I have been using R on windows for for some years (since v1.6/1.7). I'm in a transition to linux. One major reason for this move is the existence of rkward.
I have started out with Ubuntu (with Gnome) as it seems very accessible to a 'winholic', and I am extremely pleased. I have installed R and am now researching rkward.
I am an absolute linux newbie so my question may be obvious. I did some searching for rkward + gnome but the results lead me to believe that this might not be possible.

My question: Can rkward be installed under Gnome? If the answer is yes, I will probably need a newbie friendly instruction on how to do it.

Yes it can be used. Under ubuntu which I use there is a package of rkward.

The question is if you have installed R or ubuntu repos or compiled it yourself.

If the first is true then install rkward from the repos. If you want to upgrade to the current version download the rkward.deb package, click on it, it should say that an older version is availiable at the repos and ask you if you want to install this, you says yes and probably you are ready. If there is any problem you can say.

If you have compiled R yourself you have to compile rkward yourself too. That means that you have to install some qt developments libraries. During the configuration script if you get any errors you have to fix them.

      Thanks
It appears to have installed without problems, I am now testing it - wow, it looks really nice - I'm thrilled, this is going to be really great :)

Oh.. one more question: Is there a better way of starting the program that typing 'rkward' in a console? (Probably more a linux question than an R question).

I also installed something called r-gnome which I found in the packet manager - haven't tested as I don't know how to start it.

Edit (right-click on the menu bar) your menu or start from a terminal alacarte. Choose a place where you want to have it, click on it on the left menu and then choose new item. Give the name, give the command rkward, and if you want you can choose an icon from /usr/share/icons/crystalsvg/48x48/apps. And you are done. (I have compiled rkward, but I believe that icons should be there).

r-gnome should be a gui for gnome. If it so you have to type in a terminal R --gui=gnome.

Thanks for your quick reply - it works like a charm.
After 12 years in windows, I find Ubuntu so easy to use compared to XP - so far at least. I've only been on this 'dope' since yesterday (well, and 2-3 weeks researching howto). I'm already doing part of my professional work in Ubuntu now.

r-gnome does not seem to work correctly yet - reinstalled but no luck - but it is really not important, I'll figure out eventually.
