The old BSD Syslog and the newer IETF syslog standard is fully supported by NXLog in addition to Snare, XML, JSON, GELF, KVP, CSV and custom formats. A few years ago (ok a LOT) I had written a VERY simple network monitoring system for work. It primarily gathers syslog events, and does a basic TCP connect to check on machine state. This uses MSDE as it's engine for events.

Logspooler is a simple UDP server that is receiving syslog messsages from another hosts and processing them. This means analysing and inserting into a MySQL database. Logspooler is not a syslogd replacement. Analyses are based on preconfigured tables.
