GaryOS is an entire GNU/Linux system in a single bootable file. While most boot/rescue systems use an ISO with SquashFS, GaryOS is a single binary file consisting of a Linux kernel and a Funtoo/Gentoo initramfs. The file is generated using a customized Funtoo/Gentoo configuration with a default Grml Linux kernel configuration via the Metro automated build tool. There are currently no major projects which take this same approach on this scale. The result is a smaller boot/rescue file that is just as comprehensive, yet easier to deploy and manage. GaryOS enables you to drop a single file on any media, point a bootloader at it and go. Upgrades are as simple as replacing the file and/or adding another bootloader entry. Rescue media is more likely to be available and up-to-date if it is convenient to deploy and manage, which is one of the primary aims of GaryOS.
FreeOS/1 is a Free, Open Source, FreeDOS based Free and Open Source Alternative OS, with open source Microsoft Windows compatibility using HXDOSExtender KernelEx,and ReactOS source code. FreeOS/1 will include new technologies and will be easy to use
ELKS is a subset of the Linux kernel that runs on IBM compatible PCs from 8086 up. It is intended to get use out of obsolete old hardware, for use in embedded systems, and as an educational tool. ELKS has been moved to Github to protest SourceForge's installer adware hijacking. This does not directly affect ELKS, but it does affect many major open source projects such as Gimp and FileZilla by attempting to trick the user into installing adware in order to download these programs. It uses modular system utilities that are loaded into memory on boot, allowing for high customizable. Because of this, custom options and settings do not affect speed. The kernel is a modified version of the Linux kernel.

A small multitasking OS to run on 65C816 based systems. Features to include a GUI support for as much HW for the supported systems as possible and a system of system extensions for easy expandability of the OS. The initial Development is being done on the Apple IIgs, with plans to port to the Commodore 64 with a SuperCPU. Eventually there will be ports to other 8 and 16-bit CPUs beginning with the 6502, followed by the z80, 6800, 6809, 8086, PDP-11, and then the TMS9900. Once these are complete there will be 32-bit ports to the 680x0, ARM, MIPS, etc.
