...It therefor can be "decompressed" (which makes it 6 times smaller) with the standard gzip. This shows that gzip (and deflate and any compression tool that uses one of them) but also, as I expect, any other compression format can be used to augment data significantly. -

This program intentionally corrupts a unix stream at a specified error rate. It is for systematic analysis on the effects of data corruption. I wrote it to simulate bit-rot in file archives so I could test RAID and archive strategies for data recovery. A few short bash scripts are included so you can instantly enjoy text, image, audio, and video corruption. Retools is a set of modifications to the commonly used open source utilities bzip2, gzip, rsync, and tar that automatically selects the Lustre stripe count for created and/or extracted files according to the sizes of the files involved. By striping large files over a higher number of physical disks and small files over a lower number, aggregate I/O bandwidth for large files is maximized and the impact to the file system due to small files is minimized. -

A Linux utility that monitors I/O requests going to physical disks and maps the requests to the files for which they were issued. It doesn't monitor file I/O, which can hit the cache. It only tracks file usage that generates disk activity.

A small utility that allows to recover accidentally removed files as long as they are still open. The "removed" file will be restored consistently - even if it's under heavy I/O - by re-creating the link to the file's i-node in the filesystem.

...Whoever is responsible for this sorry situation ought to be ashamed. So I'm going to deobfuscate LZO and provide a ISC implementation of this algorithm in Python and C. In addition, I will provide a textual description of the algorithm so that it can be easily ported to any programming language. I expect a severe performance degradation, but I leave optimizing for speed to other people. -
