Image cropping is a common task in many web applications. Usually just cutting out the center of the image works out ok. It's often a compromise and sometimes it fails miserably. Smartcrop.js is the result of my experiments with content aware image cropping. It uses fairly simple image processing and a few rules to attempt to create better crops of images. This library is still in it's infancy but the early results look promising. So true to the open source mantra of release early, release often, I'm releasing version 0.0.0 of smartcrop.js. ...

...I also made a per-pixel animation experiment using the box-shadow idea, see morphin. Pure CSS, this output was created by resizing and setting each pixel as a box shadow of a single-pixel div, so no IMG tag or background image is needed. This can result in huge outputs, and the use of this output is not recommended for production unless there is no other option. Base64, the entire image file is embedded inside the <img> tag using base64, so no need for external hosting is needed.
