We live in very exciting times 😃! BLDC motors are entering the hobby community more and more and many great projects have already emerged leveraging their far superior dynamics and power capabilities. BLDC motors have numerous advantages over regular DC motors but they have one big disadvantage, the complexity of control. Even though it has become relatively easy to design and manufacture PCBs and create our own hardware solutions for driving BLDC motors the proper low-cost solutions are yet to come. One of the reasons for this is the apparent complexity of writing the BLDC driving algorithms, Field oriented control (FOC) being an example of one of the most efficient ones. The solutions that can be found online are almost exclusively very specific for certain hardware configurations and the microcontroller architecture used. Additionally, most of the efforts at this moment are still channeled towards the high-power applications of the BLDC motors and proper low-cost FOC. -

Open implementation of the x86 architecture
OpenSOC86 is an open implementation of the x86 architecture in Verilog. The current version only implements the 16-bit part (real mode). The processor is a pipelined architecture clocked at 100 MHz in a Cyclone II speed grade -6. Therefore it can be seen as similar to a 486 in real mode. Several peripherals are also implemented in a somewhat minimalistic way, but enough to be able to boot an IBM PCXT compatible bios and MSDOS 6.22. The current implementation is only proven to boot the bios and DOS in simulation. The system is targeted to run on the DE2-70 board. In order to run the system in hardware a SDRAM and SRAM controller need to be added. These are currently in development. -

DIY Split-Flap Display
DIY split-flap display
This is a work in progress split-flap display. Each module can flip between 40 unique characters: letters, numbers, and a few symbols. Multiple modules fit perfectly alongside each other to build bigger displays. The primary design goal was to make something that's possible to fabricate at home in small or single quantities and can be customized and built by an intermediate hobbyist at a reasonable price. This meant using widely available materials and avoiding any tooling with a high upfront cost. Following that philosophy, the design uses store-bought vinyl stickers for the letters, is driven by an ubiquitous and cheap 28BYJ-48 stepper motor, and uses common PVC ID badge cards cut to shape for the flaps (though custom die-cut flaps are also available). Even the enclosure, spool, and gears, which are all made from laser-cut MDF, can be easily ordered online. -

HoloCubic is a multi-function transparent display “desktop station” that uses a dispersive prism to create a pseudo-holographic visual effect, combined with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity to support interactive network-capable applications. Built around an ESP32 PICO-D4 microcontroller, a 1.3″ 240×240 ST7789 display and MPU6050 inertial sensor, the device allows you to build a “floating hologram” style display module with additional networked visual features like weather display or follower counts. The hardware design includes versions of the PCB (Naive version, Ironman version) and 3D model files for the enclosure (3D printed or CNC metal). The software leverages LVGL (a GUI library for microcontrollers) and supports surface touch or IMU-based input. Because it connects via WiFi/Bluetooth, it can fetch live data and display dynamic content, bridging embedded display, network, and interactive gadget design.
