A really wonderful software to visualise and analyse GPS traces in many different ways (speed and elevation variation, etc.), with different background maps (hiking map, road map, orienteering map, aerial image, cycling map, etc.). It is possible to make KML exports.

Polaris is a open source software that allows to calibrate a raster map and create routes and waypoints. All elements can be later exported to a file in GPS Exchange Format (GPX) for further processing. It also offers Datum conversion between different coordinate systems. Mono runtime environment (http://www.mono-project.com) as well as GTK# (http://www.mono-project.com/GtkSharp) are needed in order to run polaris.
