Public Sans
A strong, neutral, principles-driven, open source typeface for text
A strong, neutral typeface for interfaces, text, and headings. Public Sans is a fork of the SIL Open Licensed face Libre Franklin. Public Sans has many similarities with its parent, but differs enough in its particulars that its effect is distinct. Adjusted vertical metrics. Public Sans is about 2% shorter than Libre Franklin, and has slightly looser default line spacing. Tailed lowercase l. The lowercase l character has a hooked tail for disambiguation. (There is also an optional untailed l.) Regularized stroke weight. Public Sans provides a more regular letterform from the conventional Franklin shape for a cleaner, more consistent letterform, especially at small sizes. Non-rounded vertices. Conventional angled vertices result in a sharper, stronger form. Narrower characters. Public Sans is narrower, especially in rounded characters like lowercase e to help with reading flow, especially in longer texts. Looser letterspacing. Public Sans has relatively loose letterspacing for reading. -

Recursive Sans & Mono is a variable type family built for better code & UI. It is inspired by casual script signpainting, but designed primarily to meet the needs of programming environments and application interfaces. In programming, “recursion” is when a function calls itself, using its own output as an input to yield powerful results. Recursive Mono was used as a tool to help build itself: it was used to write Python scripts to automate type production work and to generate specimen images, and it was used in HTML, CSS, and JS to create web-based proofs & prototypes. Through this active usage, Recursive Mono was crafted to be both fun to look at as well as deeply useful for all-day work. Recursive Sans borrows glyphs from its parent mono but adjusts the widths of many key glyphs for comfortable readability. Its metrics are superplexed – every style takes up the exact same horizontal space, across all styles. -

Source Han Mono font
Source Han Mono, which is derived from Source Han Sans and Source Code Pro, is an OpenType/CFF Collection (OTC) that includes 70 font instances—consisting of seven weights, five languages, and two styles—and is a Pan-CJK version of Source Han Code JP. This open-source project provides all of the source files that are necessary to build this OpenType/CFF Collection by using the AFDKO makeotf, tx, sfntedit, and otf2otc tools. The 70-font OpenType/CFF Collection, SourceHanMono.ttc, which is called a Super OTC due to its large number of font instances, can be easily downloaded from the Latest Release. Please be advised that the ZIP file for the Latest Release, which includes all of the source files and other collateral, is approximately 3.25GB. To build the Super OTC from source, you need to have installed the Adobe Font Development Kit for OpenType (AFDKO). The AFDKO tools are widely used for font development today, and are part of most font editor applications. -

Space Grotesk is a proportional sans-serif typeface variant based on Colophon Foundry's fixed-width Space Mono family (2016). Originally designed by Florian Karsten in 2018, Space Grotesk retains the monospace's idiosyncratic details while optimizing for improved readability at non-display sizes. Family is built using fontmake and gftools post-processing script. Tools are all python based. Space Grotesk is licensed under the SIL Open Font License v1.1, see OFL.txt for details. -

Work Sans

Work Sans was made in part on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin nations. I pay my respect to their elders, past, present and future. Sovereignty has never been ceded. Work Sans has been updated between 2018–2020 with accompanying italics, and variable font files and the character set has been expanded to the Google Latin Expert glyph set, which will now support Vietnamese along with these additional languages. Work Sans is a 9-weight typeface family based loosely on early Grotesques — i.e. Stephenson Blake, Miller & Richard, and Bauerschen Giesserei. The core of the fonts are optimized for on-screen medium-sized text usage (14px-48px) – but still can be used in print well. The fonts at the extreme weights are designed more for display use. Overall, features are simplified and optimized for screen resolutions. -

Ideally, the author's idea is to use this as a minimal "replacement" for bloated and complicated desktop environments. Pragmatically, what are the "benefits" in our daily life, especially for low-end devices. Realistically, be "grateful" to accept the existence of lightweight and non-proprietary software, and use it (instead of using pirated software). -

Epcol gives simple access to using factory builtin features of ESC-P2 printers such as the Epson LQ590 printer. These printers have very nice embedded fonts that are easy to use when a file is processed by epcol before printing. The proportional fonts are very nice looking fonts. A typical usage is putting macro commands in the text file or specifying a command option to epcol on the command line as shown in the epcol syntax statement. Just give epcol an unknown option to get the syntax echoed (e.g., epcol -z). The macro commands are the macro name, .ep, followed by a command name such as roman (i.e., .ep roman) on a line by itself. The .ep\ proportional command enables the printer builtin proportional spacing font. The ocfont reviews serve as a question and answer area for epcol and other josephms sourceforge projects and are regularly checked. Rel_1.2.0 adds support for newer printer fonts (e.g., prestige) with added .ep macros and with command line -style option values. -

Octfont provides a bold and compact font (i.e., compressed spacing font or compressed font) for terminal windows. The octfont reviews serve as a question and answer area for any josephms sourceforge project and are regularly checked. Octfont includes three unicode fonts for X11 systems: oct, oct16, and oct24. They feature narrow vertical spacing and bold lettering. The narrow spacing allows more lines on the screen. While this is contrary to aesthetic principles of font design, it is convenient for editing and coding. The bold lettering permits ease in viewing. The fonts are unicode fonts with more than 5000 characters. The oct and oct16 fonts are the same font with different alias names. The oct24 font is larger. The oct16 font is even large enough to be easilyread on a 4K 3840x2160 display. The fonts include character representations for the octal control characters (hence the name, octfont) rather than translating control characters to the null string like most fonts. -

Typeface from Ming Dynasty woodblock printed books. A Ming typeface. Extracted from Ming Dynasty woodblock printed books (凌閔刻本). Using semi-automatic computer vision and OCR. Open-source. A work in progress. Named in honor of 閔齊伋, a 16th-century printer. Intended to be used with Kenyan-lang, the Classical Chinese programming language. Download high-resolution PDFs and split pages into images. Manually lay a grid on top of each page to generate bounding boxes for characters (potentially replaceable by an automatic corner-detection algorithm). Generate a low-poly mask for each character on the grid, and save the thumbnails (using OpenCV). First, red channel is subtracted from the grayscale, in order to clean the annotations printed in red ink. Next, the image is thresholded and fed into the contour-tracing algorithm. A metric is then used to discard shapes that are unlikely to be part of the character in interest. -

Source Han Code JP Version 2.010 is released. This version supports style-linking in apps that include 'B' (Bold) and 'I' (Italic) buttons in their font menu. The sorting of the font names in some apps is also improved. U+2423 '␣' OPEN BOX now has a monospaced horizontal advance of 667 units (the previous version used 1000 units). Style-linking is now supported correctly, meaning that you can access 'Bold' and 'Italic' styles by pressing the 'B' or 'I' buttons in apps that support style linking. Source Han Code JP is a derivative of Source Han Sans that replaces its proportional Latin glyphs with fixed-width 667-unit glyphs from Source Code Pro. The Latin glyphs are scaled to match the glyphs for Japanese kana and kanji, and their widths are adjusted to be exactly 667 units (two-thirds of an EM). Source Han Code JP is intended to be used as a UI font for mixed Latin and Japanese text on displays, for programming, editing HTML/CSS, viewing text or inputting to the command line.
