...Alternatively I wrote a service which can be installed easily and assigned a keyboard shortcut to execute this code (when the finder is topmost application, just by clicking into the dock for example). Developed and tested on Mac OS X 10.11.5 -

A Mac OS X toolbar app to create a file in the current directory, similar to creating a new file in the context menu in Windows Explorer. To install drag the .app file to Finder toolbar. Then click on the application icon to create a new file in the current Finder folder.
