This is possible by exploiting the sparseness of the mathematical optimization problem. The original PTOptimizer uses the well proven Levenberg Marquardt optimizer lmdif from the minpack software. fastPTOptimizer uses a "sparse" optimizer lmdif_sparse that uses the SuiteSparse library.
