...The problem is that in a multi-tenanted containers based world, multiple containers will be sharing the underlying nodes. Given containers will share the same underlying nodes, providing access to AWS resources via IAM roles would mean that one needs to create an IAM role which is a union of all IAM roles. This is not acceptable from a security perspective. -

kiam runs as an agent on each node in your Kubernetes cluster and allows cluster users to associate IAM roles with Pods. [a] role is similar to a user, in that it is an AWS identity with permission policies that determine what the identity can and cannot do in AWS. However, instead of being uniquely associated with one person, a role is intended to be assumed by anyone who needs it. Also, a role does not have any credentials (password or access keys) associated with it.
