The A, W, and K in AWK stand for the surnames of the three original creators: Alfred Aho, Peter Weinberger, and Brian Kernighan. Kernighan is also an author of The C Programming Language (“K&R”), and the two books have that same each-page-packs-a-punch feel. AWK was released in 1977, which makes it over 40 years old! Not bad for a domain-specific language that’s still used for one-liners on Unix command lines everywhere.
