Today in Tech – 1961

By Community Team

On this day in 1961 American engineer Robert Noyce was awarded a patent for the integrated circuit by the US Patent Office. This started a long patent battle between Noyce and Jack Kilby, who demonstrated the first working integrated circuit in 1958. Kilby’s chip however, was made of germanium whereas Noyce’s was made of silicon and became more accepted. In the end however, Noyce and Kilby were both credited for the realization of the first integrated circuit that later fueled the personal computer revolution.

In 1957 Noyce co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor and the now multinational tech company Intel Corporation in 1968. He is often referred to as “the Mayor of Silicon Valley” for his contributions to its establishment.

This is so crazy to believe almost 70 years ago the -y were already able to develop integrated circuit like this !
