Help Wanted: DGuitar

The DGuitar project is looking for Java programmers to help out with their roadmap towards the next release.

Mauricio Gracia Gutiérrez of the project says:

My intention with DGUITAR is to include GP5 and other file formats (the whole CODEC concepts) and display MUSIC NOTATION (not just tablature) and allow EDIT/CREATION of files

Also the posibility to have a DGuitarMusicPlayer for your GUITAR FILES that allows you to ENJOY an ORGANIZE your music colection without having to open the full program an play them one by one.

Other ideas are to include a WEB version that works on mobile devices, such as Android/IOS and does not even need to be downloaded or installed.

If you’re interested, please contact us, or post a message to the developers forum.

Help Wanted: Syslog for Windows, AutoREALM, FreeSMS

Since we started doing these Help Wanted blog posts, the response has been overwhelming. I’m really excited about dormant projects coming back to life with new developers and new ideas.

If your project is looking for developers, please email us, and we’ll do what we can to help you find them.

If you’re interested in working on any of these projects, let us know. It’s useful to tell us about what other projects you’ve worked on, and about your ideas for the project that you want to work on. We’re not going to turn over the reins to the first person that comes along, so convince us that you’re the right person for the job.

Here’s the latest batch of projects that are looking for a breath of fresh air.

  • Syslog for windows

The syslog-win32 project provides a syslog server and client for Microsoft Windows. The developer on this project, however, has moved away from developing for Windows, and so no longer has the time or inclination to work on this. If you’ve done much time administering Windows servers, you know how valuable a logging service can be, to augment the built-in reporting mechanisms. If you’re interested in working on this project, or in taking over maintenance of it, email us and we’ll set you up.

  • AutoREALM

AutoREALM is a free role-playing game mapping program originally made by Andrew Gryc. This program is an excellent mapping program that can design castles, caves, cities, dungeons and more. New developers are more than welcome!

The project may appear inactive, but there’s a variety of work going on, and they need help. Although the original development was in Delphi, it’s being rewritten in C++, OpenGL and WxWidgets. If you have experience in any or all of these technologies, I’d be glad to make the necessary introductions. There’s lots to do.

  • FreeSMS (Free Student Management System)

FreeSMS is a PHP based application to manage an educational facility of teachers and students alike. It is a teacher and student management system providing marketing, registration, course management, attendance and a student evaluation system.

There are numerous open feature requests on this project, and the lead developer, Bogdan Cristea, is anxious to have help implementing them. The code is written in PHP.

If your project is interested in attracting new developers, or if you’re a developer looking for something to work on, please get in touch. I’m glad to play matchmaker. Few things please me more than seeing an inactive Open Source project start producing code again.

Developers Wanted: Box2DFlashAS3, WANem, Juice

Several more projects have mentioned to me that they’re looking for developers to take over, or assist, in the development of their project.

Box2DFlashAS3 is a Flash ActionScript 3.0 port of Erin Catto’s 2D Physics library Box2D. The current developers have moved on to other things, and the port is falling behind the original. If you’re interested, let us know.

WANem – Wide Area Network Emulator
WANem is a wide area network emulator. It supports various features such a bandwidth limitation, latency, packet loss, network disconnection among other wide area network characteristics.

WANem won the FOSS India Awards in 2008, and the SourceForge Community Choice Awards that same year. But the various developers have moved on to other things, and they’re looking for new maintainers.

Get in touch with me, and I’ll make the necessary introductions.

Juice, cross-platform podcast receiver

Juice is a media aggregator that automatically downloads files to your computer or portable device, leaving you ‘one-click-away’ from latest media. Based on the iPodder idea of Adam Curry.

Although it’s been a long time without a release, Juice still has a large number of users.

There are a few people wanting to help, but restarting the project requires a massive time investment that is too big for an occasional helper.

It is not developers that this project is lacking. This project needs a project manager that will dive into the code-base and study the current state of the project (which hsa changed since the 2006 official release) and make a plan of how to continue the development, where should this software head to, what features needs to be added, what should/can be removed, etc.

Only after such a road map exists, it would be beneficial to gather and build a team of developers to wake up the project and put it back on a development track.

If you’re interested in any of these development efforts, please contact us, and we’ll put you in touch with the right people.

Developers wanted: pdfcrack, ZedGraph, Pencil

You know how it is. You create a project, you accumulate users, and then one day you’re not interested in maintaining it any more. It’s happened to all of us. But the great thing about Open Source, of course, is that someone else can pick it up and keep those users happy.

Here’s three projects that have strong userbases, but the developers aren’t interested in working on them any more. If you have the necessary skills to work on these, fix bugs, and release further updates, please contact me, and I’ll make the necessary introductions.

pdfcrack is a command line, password recovery tool for PDF-files. There is a need for small redesign to be made to get it up to par with the latest Adobe PDF standards and probably and probably a few bugs to squash for basic maintenance.

ZedGraph is a class library, user control, and web control for .net, written in C#, for drawing 2D Line, Bar, and Pie Charts. It features full, detailed customization capabilities, but most options have defaults for ease of use.

The current developers all agree that it’s an exciting project with great features … but they no longer have the time to work on it. If you have C# experience, they could use your help to resolve some bugs and move the project forward.

Pencil is a cross-platform open-source 2D animation software. Its first aim is to make traditional animations (cel, cartoons, etc). It features bitmap and vector drawing tools, layers, cameras. Animations made with Pencil can be exported as QuickTime. The lead developer, Tom, has been working on refactoring the code to make it easier to maintain going forward, but could use some help, as most of the other developers have moved on to other things. Pencil is written in C++.

Developers Wanted: sqliteman

sqliteman (sqlite3 admin and devel tool) is a developer’s or admin’s GUI tool for Sqlite3 (sqlite). It gives you tools to administer sqlite, and manage your data.

Unfortunately, the lead developer, Petr Vaněk, tells me he just doesn’t have much motivation to work on it any more, since he no longer uses sqlite at work. He’s looking for a new developer to take over the development of this project and bring it forward to the present.

If you’re interested in working on this project, please let me know, and I’ll make the necessary introductions.
