New Year’s Resolutions

It’s never too late for New Year’s Resolutions. Here’s a few you might consider.

Rewrite your resume, using Apache Open Office. No time like the new year to look back over what you’ve accomplished in the past year, and update your resume to make yourself more hirable. A resume template for Open Office is a great help if you’re not sure where to start.

Rearrange your living room to get rid the clutter, but this time, use SweetHome3D to get it just right before you break your back moving everything around three times.

Stop using the same password for everything, and use KeePass to keep track of your new, much stronger, passwords.

Setup/update your website/blog. There’s a lot of options here. You can set up your home server using xampp or wampserver, then use FileZilla to manage your files. Or, if you want to get really fancy, you can use XOOPS for a full CMS solution.

Catch up on your movie queue, using HandBrake to put some of your movies on your laptop, and then watch them with VLC while you’re on the train.

Automate your house lights and thermostat with MisterHouse, mochad, and OpenRemote. You can save money on your utilities bill, and dim the lights without getting out of your armchair.

Get into OSS development, using TortoiseSVN to ease the learning curve of using revision control. If you’re not sure what to work on, have a look at the Help Wanted Forum for ideas.
