pdftex opens the output .pdf file with write sharing access. This is bad for many reasons (and can actually be an indirect cause of file locking problems in some situations). One problem is that you can start two instances of pdftex on the same .tex file without getting any error message, then the writing operations gets interleaved and you end up with a corrupt .pdf.

In order to speed-up the loading of the beamer package I have generated a precompiled format file using pdfetex.
Then when I compile my .tex file (with the format file loaded) I get the following error:
! pdfTeX error (ext1): cannot find referenced object.
