URLs are unicode things these days, with UTF-8 encoding used for the URL itself. Formencode does not support: its URL validator only allows a pure ASCII URL.

The tag is stripped from the output somewhere.

The docstring for htmlfill.render documents the error_class option, but that option is not an accepted parameter. The FillingParser class does implement it, but the render method has not been updated to pass that in.
