My apologies for the delayed response. I do not wish to explain in an open
forum the personal reasons for the delay.
I believe the Fink version was of the 0.2.3+ variety. As I noted in my
original submission, this was a fresh download and install of the latest Fink
dmg from the sourceforge website, on a new installation of OS X. Frankly,
I did not...

I've had to reformat my hard drive and do a clean install of
everything. I have downloaded and installed the latest version of
Fink and Fink commander, run self-update cvs, etc. Unstable
packages are enabled, ditto unstable crypto. I am only seeing
about half the packages that should be there. Lost of missing
packages that I need for dependencies.
Any clue why I am having this...

In the end, I could not finish compiling gdal. A quick question for
you: My fink set up was carried over from before I had OS X
10.3. It is using the system-xfree86 wrapper. the gdal installation
fails on xfree86. do I no longer need the wrapper with 10.3? Is
there something simple I can change, or should I really be starting
from scratch...

Thank you Martin. Yes, that last bit I tried was maybe not the
cleverest thing I've done. The advice you linked to worked like a
charm. Thank you for the hand holding.
gdal is now compiling, and everything looks fine.

I regularly use self-update. I just updated fink commander and
ran self-update again, updated package descriptions, etc. It shows
Fink 0.17.1-1 as current.
After getting the comment from costabel, I downloaded the fink
binaries and tried to reinstall fink. this is not allowed, because
there is already a /sw directory.
How do I force Fink to...

I first used "negative feedback" in the fink commander tools

I have installed gdal-1.1.8-2 using Fink/Fink Commander on
a mac running OS X 10.3.
what gets installed is
libgdal.1.dylib
which is actually just a soft link to
libgdal.1.1.dylib
unfortunately, fink doesn't also install libgdal.1.1.dylib
at least, when the installation is done, all that is left is the
soft link, not the library it points to.

I have compiled e002shp on a Mac G4 running os x 10.2.6.
The *.AAT and *.BND files are successfully created, and then e002shp crashes. The error messages and crash log are attached below. The same thing happens with all of the files I have tried to convert so far. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Tony
