This was determined to be a vendor problem which was fixed. A comment has been placed in ESMF_CalRangeUTest.F90 noting this, in case someone in the future looks at this again.

Jim Edwards has provided a "hot fix" compiler from IBM which corrects the problem. It is available on bluefire. To compile ESMF with it, set:
export ESMF_F90='xlf90_r -tcih -B/contrib/xlf/12_091127/exe'
I tested this on bluefire, using the current trunk, and the test cases now pass. Sent Tony email on 12/9 of this.
